Members of Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Georgetown perform before President Barack Obama speaks at a celebration of Cinco de Mayo in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington on May 3, 2012.

On Saturday, Americans across the country will gather to celebrate the 150th Cinco de Mayo. Donning sombreros and dancing to mariachi music, revelers will celebrate everything Mexican, and enjoy a shot of tequila—or three. The holiday has become ingrained in the American calendar, and in 2005 Congress passed a resolution calling on the president to recognize the historical significance of the holiday. Contrary to widespread popular belief, May 5th is not actually Mexican Independence Day, and the holiday is primarily celebrated in only one of Mexico’s 31 states. So, why is Cinco de Mayo more popular in America than in Mexico?

[See the latest political cartoons.]

The real story of Cinco de Mayo weaves together two concurrent wars—the French intervention in Mexico (also known as The Maximillian Affair) and the American Civil War. On May 5, 1862, defending Mexican forces under Ignacio Zaragoza defeated Napoleon III’s French army at Puebla, one of the most important Spanish colonial cities in Mexico. At the time, the French army was considered to be the most powerful fighting force in the world, and the unlikely Mexican victory resulted in a decree by then-Mexican President Benito Juárez that a celebration of the battle be held each year on May 5th. Cinco de Mayo was born, but it was about to be kidnapped.

As the French were making war with Mexico, the American Confederacy was courting Napoleon’s help in its conflict with the United States. At the time of the Battle of Puebla, the Confederacy had strung together impressive victories over the Union forces. According to some historians, the French, who made war with Mexico on the pretext of collecting debt, planned to use Mexico as a &"base&" from which they could help the Confederacy defeat the North, and the Mexican victory at Puebla made the French pause long enough for the Union army to grow stronger and gain momentum. Had the French won at Puebla, some contend, the outcome of the American Civil War could have been much different, as the French and Confederates together could have taken control of the continent from the Mason Dixon line to Guatemela, installing an oligarchical, slave-holding government.

That didn’t happen, of course. In the years that followed, Latinos in California and the U.S. Northwest celebrated Cinco de Mayo with parades of people dressed in Civil War uniforms, giving speeches about how the Battle of Puebla fits into the larger narrative of the struggle for abolition.

Since then, the holiday has been transformed, specifically after a wave of Mexican immigration into the United States following the Mexican Civil War. As Mexican immigrants flooded into the American southwest, they joined in the festivities with their fellow Mexican-Americans who were already living in the United States without really knowing the story behind the holiday, and over time the date came to be a showcase of Mexican ethnic identity rather than a celebration of the battle against the invading French forces.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Jody Agius Vallejo, a sociology professor at the University of Southern California, explained the Cinco de Mayo phenomenon this way: &"It’s very similar to how Irish-Americans celebrate St. Patrick’s Day,&" said Vallejo. &"One way they can honor their ethnicity is to celebrate this day, even when most don’t know why.&"

Metro issued a permit Saturday and Sunday to allow filming for a television commercial for a major car manufacturer in a variety of locations downtown.

The Korean Veterans Bridge was one of the film locations and was closed longer than anticipated because of the filming that impacted drivers in the downtown area.

The permit was issued for when much of about three miles of Interstate-24 was closed over the weekend – from the I-24/I-65 split north of downtown to the I-24/I-40 split east of downtown.

Similar weekend road closures are scheduled this spring and summer to rehabilitate the Woodland Street and Main Street bridges.

“The (Public Works) department plans to refrain from issuing permits that will negatively impact traffic or hinder access to established detour routes during TDOTs bridge project on I-24,’’ Public Works spokeswoman Gwen Hopkins-Glascock stated in an email. “While this may be an inconvenience to some customers seeking permits in the downtown area, ensuring these detour routes remain accessible is clearly our first priority while the interstate bridge construction is underway.’’

Metro Police did not report any unusual problems with the weekend road closures of I-24, department spokeswoman Kristin Mumford said.

The project is on track according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation. Major work will continue May 4-7.

LOS ANGELES — When captain Dustin Brown crunched Alex Pietrangelo with a hit along the boards in the opening minutes, the Los Angeles Kings knew they hadnt lost whatever fire has driven them deep into the playoffs.

The eighth-seeded Kings are a team transformed, executing against St. Louis with all the precision, passion and consistency that eluded them for much of an erratic regular season.

And now these late bloomers are one win away from emerging in the Western Conference finals.

Drew Doughty had a goal and two assists, Jonathan Quick made 18 saves and the Kings moved to the brink of an unlikely second-round sweep with a 4-2 victory over the Blues in Game 3 on Thursday.

Mike Richards scored Los Angeles first power play goal in six games before setting up Doughtys clinching goal with 11:48 to play for the Kings, who methodically improved to 7-1 in the postseason with their third straight dominant win over second-seeded St. Louis.

When you have success, you gain confidence, and weve been playing the same system and the same style for a while now, Richards said. Were maybe a little surprised its going like this, but we knew going into every game we have a chance to win.

WASHINGTON, Apr 23, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) –
Thompson Hine LLP is pleased to announce the arrival of a highly
regarded team of transportation and international trade lawyers —
Charles A. Hunnicutt, G. Brent Connor and Patricia N. Snyder. The
lawyers will be joined by Scott E. Diamond, a non-lawyer international
trade specialist. The group joins from the Washington, D.C. office of
Troutman Sanders. This brings to nine the number of lawyers in Thompson
Hine’s Transportation group, which is nationally ranked by Chambers
and covers rail, truck, vessel and aircraft transportation.

“We are thrilled to have such a talented group of lawyers join us. They
add depth to our practice in aviation and their range of experience will
help our clients navigate the continually changing regulatory
landscape,” said Karyn A. Booth, Transportation practice group leader.
“Charlie’s government service and significant experience in
international trade will be of particular benefit to our clients as his
practice both complements and expands our trade work,” said Matthew R.
Nicely, International Trade practice group leader. “Clients who move
products, both across international borders and within the United
States, should find the combination of our transportation and trade
capabilities to be a unique resource.”

Hunnicutt has extensive background in aviation and international trade
policy from his years of service with the U.S. Department of
Transportation, the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S.
Department of Commerce. He has a broad commercial and international
practice at the intersection of transportation and international trade.
Hunnicutt represents clients before executive branch and independent
regulatory agencies as well as federal courts. He is ranked by Chambers
as a leading lawyer in the category of Nationwide Aviation:
Regulatory. Clients interviewed by Chambers note that he is a
“solid political adviser.” “Thompson Hine was a natural fit,” said
Hunnicutt. “The strong transportation and international trade practices
will benefit our clients, as will the complementary practices of
intellectual property, litigation and corporate.”

The new lawyers have a wide range of government experience that will
benefit Thompson Hine’s clients. Hunnicutt served as Assistant Secretary
of Transportation for Aviation and International Affairs, Legal Advisor
to the Chair of the U.S. International Trade Commission, Executive
Assistant to the Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade and
Assistant to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce. Snyder served
for 15 years in the International Law office of the U.S. Department of
Transportation and its predecessor, the Civil Aeronautics Board, where
she focused primarily on U.S. international air services negotiations.
During her time at DOT, she spent several years on detail to the U.S.
Department of State’s Office of the Legal Advisor, where she was part of
the legal team that successfully prosecuted the U.S. claim against the
United Kingdom for millions of dollars in improper charges to U.S.
airlines.

In addition to extensive experience with general transportation and
international trade matters, the team has handled significant aviation
matters, including the establishment of international alliances and
joint ventures. They represent alliances and other transportation
entities in many areas of logistics and supply chain management. They
monitor federal legislation affecting the airline industry and represent
clients on Capitol Hill.

Thompson Hine’s Washington office is well poised for growth, having
moved last month to new office space at 1919 M Street NW, after
outgrowing its prior space. “The team is a fantastic addition to the
Washington office,” said David A. Wilson, Washington office
partner-in-charge. “Charlie’s practice bridges two of our key practice
areas — transportation and international trade. The fit couldn’t be
better.”

Hunnicutt holds a J.D. from the University of Georgia, an LL.M. from
Vrije Universiteit Brussel, a Certificate of the Hague Academy of
International Law and a B.S. from American University. Snyder holds a
J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis and graduated summa cum
laude with a B.A. from Lehigh University. Connor holds a J.D. from
The Catholic University of America and a B.A. from Clark University.

World, feast your eyes upon the new Galaxy S III, a device that Samsung says draws its inspiration from nature and is intended to give the iPhone 4S a run for its money.

Along with the phones release at a London event on May 3, Samsung dropped the first commercial for the powerful new device.

Posted on the SamsungTomorrow YouTube channel, the video is a minute long and focuses mostly on the people who will presumably be using the phone — a couple saying goodbye at the airport, a wedding party, a father and child. The device itself is featured for only a few seconds in the beginning of the ad and for several more at the end. In between is a series of dramatic scenes (complete with dramatic music) mostly showing interactions between one human and another rather than between a person and the Galaxy S III itself.

As the video wraps, it becomes clear why Samsung chose to limit the Galaxy S IIIs appearance in the commercial and instead explain its abilities with short descriptions like It understands you, and Waits till youre asleep nestled between phone-less scenes. The ad ends thus: The Samsung Galaxy S III. Designed for humans.

During the ad, we do get a glimpse at one of the devices most exciting new features: Smart Stay, which keeps the device awake as long as youre looking at it. By tracking your eye movement, the Galaxy S III goes to sleep when youve closed your eyes or when youve moved your face away from the screen, rather than shutting off the display when youre not touching it.

Check out the commercial (above) and read more about its coolest new features below. What do you think of this ad for Samsungs new Galaxy S III? Do you plan on buying one? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!

(PRWEB) May 04, 2012

Clopton Capital, a secondary market commercial real estate lender which provides commercial loans for income producing properties nationwide, is announcing the expansion and addition of non-recourse lending options for operators and owners of hospitality properties.

A nationwide program for financing hotel properties with non-recourse CMBS loans has recently been sourced and added to the portfolio of lending options offered by the company. We are a direct originator for several CMBS conduits throughout the nation, says Jake Clopton, founder of Clopton Capital. This allows us to offer low pricing and fast turnaround for loans looking for a non-recourse loan option. Clopton Capital uses not one, but a dozen CMBS conduits offering borrowers access to the entire CMBS market with a one stop shop as oppose to going from place to place and a long drawn out process.

Clopton Capital ranks as one of the most active and dynamic commercial real estate finance firms providing lending options nationwide for income producing properties. Offering commercial mortgages, construction loans, bridge loans, and CMBS loans to borrowers for a diverse range of property types and ownership structures, Clopton Capital has the capability to meet almost any lending needs of property owners and managers.

This years crop of Academic All-Stars makes the average teen appear to be a slacker.

In a banquet room full of 170 high-achieving teens, organizers say they are the next scientists, lawyers, CEOs, doctors, professors or even a governor.

Before heading off to colleges throughout the country, these seniors are already blazing trails in and out of school.

Eleven seniors from nine area schools were honored Friday at the Hilton Hotel as the 2012 C Spire Wireless Academic All-Stars.

For more than 40 years, The Commercial Appeal has recognized athletes in its Best of the Preps program. Then in 2006, the newspaper decided to give equal recognition for students who excel in academics, leadership and community service. C Spire Wireless became a partner two years ago.

Education has always been important to us, said Jim Richmond, C Spire corporate communications director. This program not only salutes these bright students but encourages them to stay in the greater Memphis area after they finish college.

C Spire really cares about the Memphis area and we feel that this is a terrific program for the future of Memphis.

When ST Davis of Millington Central High heard his voice on an earlier taped video, he knew he had won the art award.

It was a rush of excitement and butterflies. My mother went into a frenzy, said Davis, who hopes to become a cinematographer.

Already his photography has appeared on a billboard in Manhattan during a National Art Educators convention.

Hutchison Schools Caroline Orr raised $15,000 through two art shows to go to an impoverished school in Tanzania and was recently named a Presidential Scholar by the White House.

Bolton Highs Molly Yates learned web design and created an online version of her high school newspaper that went beyond digitalizing the print version. She included podcasts, videos, student polls and even a Twitter feed.

As the Academic All-Star for Science, Briarcrest Christians Matt Rivera can list on his resume that he published an article that will appear in the International Journal of Quantum Chemistry this year.

The research project looked at removing the side effects of drugs, such as hair loss with chemotherapy.

The winner of the foreign language award, Sara Kim of St. Marys Episcopal, knows from experience what it feels like to be unable to speak a countrys native language. When her mother took at job in Korea, she couldnt speak Korean. Now she is fluent in Korean and Spanish and is learning Mandarin.

During the introduction, Joe Pepe, publisher of The Commercial Appeal, urged the high achievers to make their mark in Memphis once they finished with college. You are our best and brightest, he said. Come back as taxpaying citizens, subscribe to the newspaper and be a leader.

Said University of Memphis president Dr. Shirley Raines: Wherever you go, think of Memphis and decide to come home.

– Lela Garlington: (901) 529-2349

C Spire Wireless Academic All-Stars

Matt Rivera, Briarcrest Christian, Science

Brandon Zheng, Collierville High, General Scholarship

Nick Deatherage, Bolton High, Music

Sara Kim, St. Marys Episcopal, Foreign Language

Eli Goldstein, Memphis University School, Mathematics

Molly Yates, Bolton High, English amp; Literature

Melanie Culhane, Germantown High, Drama amp; Speech

Morgan Riley, Hernando High, Career-Technical

Sarah Naids, Germantown High, Social Sciences amp; History

ST Davis, Millington Central High, Art

Caroline Orr, Hutchison School, General Scholarship

																															Network World

Cybercriminals have already figured out how to hack into enterprise infrastructure, and the critical infrastructure that controls our nations supply of water, gas, oil and electricity just might be next.

With so many connections and shared vulnerabilities between the two infrastructures, the inevitability of this is unsettling. If the critical infrastructure is successfully penetrated, electrical grids could be shut down, water supplies could be turned off, telecommunications channels could be severed, and transportation systems could come to a halt. Take the electrical grid offline and massive numbers of power-reliant entities could grind to a halt, including everything from banks to hospitals.

TREND: Hottest IT skill? Cybersecurity

Each day brings media attention to yet another breach, but it seems we are unable to make headway on the security front. Its certainly not from a lack of resources; we have plenty of technology, standards, and regulations to draw upon.

It seems to boil down to the fact that we continue to do stupid things. We still write insecure code. We still dont patch our systems. We still dont control user rights properly. We still use the same usernames and passwords across multiple accounts throughout both our personal and business worlds. And, you guessed it — these passwords we use arent even managed well. Its no wonder corporations continue to get hacked.

But what we should be most concerned about is that our two infrastructures — the private/commercial/enterprise infrastructure and the critical/industrial/utility infrastructure — are interconnected in many ways, and security weaknesses within either therefore put both at risk.

Approximately 85% of the nations critical infrastructure is owned by the private sector, according to the US Government Accountability Office. And, with pressure to increase profits and reduce expenses, many utilities have combined their control system networks with their commercial business networks, according to Arjen Zwaag of Cisco speaking at a Pipeline Technology Conference.

By operating over a shared network, not only do the two environments now share the same vulnerabilities, but a hacker also now has a clear, direct and trusted path to get from one environment to the other.

Adding to this, these same business networks are also connected to other private and commercial networks designed to provide end-to-end business functions, including services such as telecommunications, research and development, IT help desk and support, and many more.

For hackers, this means even more shortcuts to the critical infrastructure. Many sophisticated and targeted attacks known as advanced persistent threats (APTs) dont go directly for the pot of gold; instead they tend to find more easily accessible initial points of entry within less secure systems, and then once theyre in, strategically and unobtrusively work their way through chains of connected systems and networks to reach their end-targets.
